From 6th April 2026, eligible employees who lose their partner or their child’s primary carer within the first year of a child’s life or adoption can take up to 52 weeks of unpaid Bereaved Partner’s Paternity Leave (BPPL). This new day-one employment right is designed to provide vital support during an exceptionally difficult time.
The entitlement applies to eligible parents who have responsibility for raising the child. Employees remain protected throughout their leave, including rights relating to annual leave, pay progression and returning to work.
We recommend that schools review their relevant family or leave policies to ensure they reflect the new entitlement.
