The three recognised unions — UNISON, GMB and Unite the Union — submitted their joint NJC pay claim for 2026/27 in December 2025. The claim covers staff on local government terms, including many school support roles.
The headline elements of the claim include:
- A £3,000 or 10% pay increase (whichever is greater)
- A move to a £15 minimum hourly rate
- A two-hour reduction in the working week
- An additional day of annual leave
- Changes affecting term-time only staff
- Removal of the lowest spinal column point
The National Employers are currently considering the claim and undertaking consultation. At this stage, no formal pay offer has been made, and negotiations remain ongoing.
