Recent changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) have expanded eligibility, and increased support for employees who need time off due to illness. Introduced as part of the Employment Rights Act 2025, this came into effect on 6 April 2026.

Under the new rules, SSP is now payable from the first day of sickness absence. In addition, the Lower Earnings Limit has been removed, meaning many lower-paid and part-time employees who were previously excluded may now qualify.

There is also a new calculation method, with SSP now being paid at 80% of average weekly earnings or a flat rate of £123.25.

We advise that schools and multi-academy trusts have a review of sickness absence policies to ensure compliance with the updated legislation and remember to ALWAYS tell your payroll officer about any absence!!
