The Secretary of State for Education has instructed the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB) to provide their recommendations on a three-year pay award which would formally cover the 2026/27 and 2027/28 academic years, with the recommendation for the 2028/29 academic year being treated as indicative for the time being.
In her remit letter, The Rt Hon Bridget Phillipson explained that ‘I know how important budget certainty is when making strategic decisions – especially in the context of the wider ask on the public sector to maximise value
from every pound spent – and I want to help schools plan to spend their money as effectively as possible to provide every child with the high-quality education they deserve. I would, therefore, ask you to look further ahead with your pay recommendations’.
The Government is also aiming to speed up the pay award process and has therefore asked the STRB to submit their recommendations for the pay award by the end of February 2026.
The full remit letter can be found here and also includes interesting discussions surrounding salary safeguarding and teachers’ ‘directed time’.
